Artist Saana Murtti's delicate, polished and even surprising ceramic sculptures deal with human experiences. Murtti's work is based on a strong theoretical foundation that has emerged from the artist's studies in Wales, which focused on art ceramics.
Murtti is fascinated by the relationship between humans and the world of objects and what can be told through this. Used clothes and objects carry stories about the person who has worn them, for example, worn shoes exude memories of their wearer. Murtti doesn't want to define the people he photographs too much, so they are shown excitingly, for example, just their legs.
The medium gives shape to the themes that interest Murtti. The clay is soft during the machining phase, but becomes hard through firing. For Murtti, softness and hardness do not mean opposite qualities, but different sides of the same tool.
Saana Murtti, who lives in Helsinki, is a member of the Association of Finnish Sculptors and the Association of Design Professionals, Ornamo.
